Computer has been developed based on human, but each aim of human and computer is heading for the totally opposite direction. While human wants to be perfect as computer, computer has been developed to be like human.
They started separately and set their sights on each other's area, but human can't be computer and computer also can't be human. In other words, while human and computer are aiming for different destinations, in truth, they are going to the same singularity. This presents a paradox.
And as the previous works demonstrated the relationship between simplicity and complicity, they are contradistinctive but there is a bit of a paradox because they can't be distinguished clearly.
Simplicity and complexity, human and computer, the visible and the invisible. They can show themselves visually such as the mandelbrot set, or the other maps of chaos theory (link - research blog). Also the complexity of the Mandelbrot set is very remarkable, particularly in view of the fact that the definition of this set is, as mathematical definitions go, a strikingly simple one(1). This can explain that the computer processes many commands with a complex programming language for displaying a simple result, which is visible to human sight.
So, they are all based on the paradox and chaos theory.

While I was reading his book, I was thinking about the relationship between human and computer. The movement of mouse pointer is the same with human motion. But if we want to generate a shape in some programs like Illustrator or Maya, we need certain rules for drawing. I think these rules can separate computer from human.
As the image above, if you want to draw something with a pen tool in Illustrator, you should follow its rule for drawing. In other words, human motion can regenerate into an identifiable form through specific tools or rules into computer.

It can be applied to my previous work.
And this work can be written as follows.
complexity : simplicity = human's view : computer's external view
(but, computer has also complexity in its inner data processing.)

As a result, Syntheyes was used for making the city simpler. Also this shows the city through human's view and computer.

This is a thought after reading <The Laws of Simplicity> by John Maeda. (link_research blog)
There are too many complexities in this society. If people make this complexity simple, it will produce another inconvenience or unnecessary simplicity. Technology has made our lives more full, yet at the same time we've become uncomfortably full.(1)
It can be applied to the visual information. There are lots of visual information, and it leads to excessive visual stimulation(or stress). So what we need most now is to make complexity simple.
However, people don't like only simplicity. They usually want a simple product, but what they say about simplicity is one-button operation, but with all of their favorite features.(2) It is simple in external appearance, but its structure is complex. Is this simple or complex?
My supervisor, Prof. David said that the word of realistic has changed. When people saw a realistic drawing in the past or watched SF movie at present, they said "It is realistic". But there is a difference between its definition in the past and present. The word of realistic was used for photographical works, but now, it is used for the thing that seems to really exist. He said it is because of the development of computer, and it turned an impossible technique into a possible one. So while the meaning of "like a photo" has vanished, the meaning of "like a real" is magnified.
But both of them have the meaning of complexity. People always go crazy for realistic works, and it means they like complexity. Though we say simple is best, we like complexity, realistic works, and the product with many functions. It is a contradiction.
If we saw a small object with many functions, we say “That little thing did all that?” with surprise and pleasure. It is because simplicity is about the unexpected pleasure derived from what is likely to be insignificant and would otherwise go unnoticed.(3) The number of complex procedures are probably necessary for making simpler. In other words, we can't say it has only simplicity, and this is something like seeing the woods or the trees.
Therefore, what people like has complexity as well as simplicity. They get stressed from complexity inside of simplicity, but it doesn't always cause a negative result. A proper amount of stress can boosts our immune system, and help improve work efficiency. So I think it is also important to get a proper amount of visual stimulation or stress. (This is different from Scotopic sensitivity syndrome linked into the previous post.) For example, Autostereogram(link_research blog) is known to be helpful in optical enhancements.
Somehow it is going to be far from the book.

존 마에다의 <The Laws of Simplicity>를 읽으며 떠오른 생각. (link_research blog)

0419 - visual complexity ; simple or complex
about visual complexity (link_research blog)
The definitions of simplicity and complexity are very subjective, it is difficult to set the criteria. For example, we can't say easily that the fractal pattern I made is simple or complex. If you see it detailed, it can be felt complex, but its graphic is very simple if you see on the whole pattern which has some repetitive rules. So there is obviously a contradiction between 2 words.
People usually say that simple is best. Is that correct? I'm sure there is simplicity in every complexity. And we prefer the thing which has both simplicity and complexity. MUJI, which has the concept of simplicity, and minimalism, is the typical case. Most people like this brand whose products are simple and unrefined. But they also have complexity. We can feel the complexity from their texture because MUJI puts emphasis on recycling. Then why people like complexity, saying simple is best? I think it is because people want visual stress(wrong link).

| ways of connections |
If there are connections between only human, the shortest lines for connecting any two people must be the same form. But as I said before, human can be connected to non-human creatures, this makes some changes.
<Flight of fancy> by Bruno Munari suggested various ways for connecting, or joining 21 dots up. (link _research blog) It is not the only way to connect any 2 dots with the shortest line. We can connect them with curves and dotted lines. Or we don't even need to connect them with lines. It is not the best way to draw lines for joining dots up.
It is related to my thesis project. If I try to connect any 2 people, there are millions of ways. I think it is because of environment objects, non-human creatures that are anywhere between people.
