conclusion

I always tried to find how to show the relationship between the visible and the invisible, besides similarities between human and computer through some experiments about how human motions and electric signals can control complexity in real time graphics.

Human body has many organs and systems which can be controlled by electric signals such like a brain wave or a neuron signal. This is very similar to the structure of computer which is controlled by many electric signals from commands. We can see their motions but can’t see their signals. We can just suppose their existences.

If some invisible components around us, for example electromagnetic waves from electronics can be seen visually and they are controlled by other motions in real time, we can feel something between the real space and the surreal space. This imagination was the beginning of my thesis.

So I developed the works based on key concepts in introduction; motion, connection, simplicity and complexity, paradox, vision and dimension. In other words, the whole process is the final output for my thesis, and this will be something between the visible and the invisible.

I hope this work can give many inspirations, and will be developed by other people.

abstract - Korean ver.

1117 - ableton + EMI sound

I tried to find out which signals can create EMI sounds. An unnecessary noise of EMI from the AM radio was removed by Ableton Live program.

I recreated an object, I used the last semester, using metaballs in vvvv. This process is to check my writer patch and make the object more systematic.

1112 - extract x file

The other day I couldn't extract 3d files from vvvv (link), so I tried again using a different way.

The way I used is as follows.

1. extract x files from vvvv
2. convert x files into obj files using another program
3. load them in maya

I think this way can be made an object which can be printed by a 3D printer.

3. maya

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
1 / extract x file
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

I composed my own writer patch to extract x files.

xfileWriter.v4p - 20131112

This patch is working well to extract x files from most of geometry meshes, but I couldn't extract any data from metaballs.

x file data from metaballs / sphere harmonic / sphere - 1112_xfileTest_001 - 20131112

I assumed some possible causes of this problem.

1. wrong x file writer patch
2. quite complex form
3. 3D object seems like real, but fake
4. occurred some errors in x file data

In case of number 1, it's not the cause because most of x meshes could be extracted by the x file writer patch except metaballs. And in case of number 2, sphere harmonic has a more complex form than metaballs. Also I thought metaballs are real 3D objects. Therefore I focused on the 4th possible cause.

1. x file writer
4. x file

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

I modified the patch using mesh and vertexBuffer nodes. These nodes were used to split 3D data and organize them as x files.

x file data from metaballs - 1112_xfileTest_002 - 20131112

As a result, I could extract proper x files from metaballs.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
2 / convert x file
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Next, I used 3D exploration program to convert x files into obj files.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
3 / load into Maya
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

And finally, obj files of metaballs could be loaded in Maya. There are a few missing faces but I think it has quite good quality.

1107 - metaballs

From my another work which is about human motion as graphic and sound in Hongik media art class (link), I thought it would be better to use metaballs (link - research) for demonstrating the systematic and organic connection among different objects.

This way can be applied and helpful to developing this thesis work. Motions from human and environment in reality, and the other motions from computer signals can be linked by metaballs, and show their organic and systematic connections.
